Randi Mates from AESA and I were catching up after some time, and she tells me about her new work, and we just had to have it, for you. Fascinus, from the Latin fascinare, means to bewitch, entrance, fascinate. The divine phallus, an ancient, popular motif found in cultures throughout the world, is considered a good luck charm by both men and women alike. Granting fertility, ramping up desire, warding off the evil eye (sometimes with the spraying of ejaculate into a sinister eye!), these beautiful objects were meant to adorn and be adored.

“I started making winged phalli about a decade ago as amulets for friends who wanted love in their lives. I carved the pieces in wax while doing ceremonies around their intention and ‘flight’ into the world. A decade later, I met a charming man in CDMX who’s friend had received one from me and swore that my little necklace was the reason she found love and had two children. He inspired me to make them anew, and to send them out in the world to encourage vitality and magic. I was especially inspired by his cohort of older, passionate men in Mexico City who seemed to live their lives to the fullest.” - Randi Mates
